"I viewed your TED Talk about 3 months ago and had an ah-ha moment. I too had been coached about the softer side of business and not the core of strategic financial acumen. I've also taken several classes to move into more of a leadership position, but have not had an opportunity yet.
I decided to set up quarterly meetings with my general manager. The first one was today. He was not sure what the 1:1 was going to be about, but I gave him some background that my goal in our time together was to have him teach me how he does his job. We started with the monthly and quarterly business reviews he delivers to our executive team. He walked me through the process, what he looks for, what it's like. He also said I could sit in on the preparation (and possibly a future meeting) to see first hand because we talked about how our team could be better prepared to handle those situations.
It was a very different conversation from previous development discussions we had and I think it also set a tone of what I'm interested in doing for my future career path without stating it outright.
I'm hopeful to continue this with other key areas of his job to do more deep-dives and learn from him to enhance my standing and cement for him my goals and direction for my career.
I've done a lot of presenting and I know presenters share concepts and ideas and never know if they impact people's lives. I'm hopeful that I will be one of your success stories very soon.
